Can a solar cooker be dangerous?

Good question! And the answer is YES! As any cooker, a solar one can be dangerous. Not in a “usual way”, you should not be afraid, of course, of gas leaking or blowing up, because there is nothing like this, but the you should not look at it directly, since it focuses the light in a very strong manner and it can be dangerous on your eyes.

Think about the fact that the very reason for the existence of such a solar cooker is to focus the light in order to transform it into heat and the concentration of light there can be high, thus, dangerous to your eyes.

Also, another thing you should take care of is the temperature. The temperature inside can get up to 250 F, thus taking the pot inside with your bare hand is not a good idea. You should always use a glove of some sort, to protect your hands from burning.

Even if not as dangerous as the one that’s working on gas, or as the one with microwaves, a sun powered oven can be pretty dangerous if you think about it. It can affect your eyes if you are not careful and it can produce you serious burnings!
