Solar Cookers International

Solar Cookers International was started in 1987 by a unique group of people in the sunny Central Valley of California. To this group of 17 solar cooks, the global need for solar cooking was apparent.

It’s mission is to spread the knowledge about solar cookers all over the world. Since that moment, SCI helped over 30.000 families in the areas where sun is a constant presence, to cook with the sun freeing women and children from the burdens of gathering firewood and carrying it for miles.

Solar Cookers International has a consultative status with the United Nations, also helping people this way, by offering a constant support to this wonderful sun cooking device that really helped a lot of people.

SCI is a nonprofit organization with headquarters in Sacramento, California, USA and an office in Nairobi, Kenya. SCI’s nonprofit, tax-deductible work is supported by generous individuals, private foundations, and sales of solar cookers and supplies.

It is very interesting to see the people involved in this organization:

  • 700 international promoters
  • 6,000 SCI members
  • 11,000 contributors to, or beneficiaries of, periodic international information exchange
SCI has a lot of support from people. It is true I guess that when you help people you get help and this is one good example of collaboration for a greater, common good.
The site of Solar Cookers International, solarcookers.org is a powerful resource for good information on cooking with the sun, you can find information about producers, resellers, prices, countries where cooking with the sun is used, etc.
