Why solar ovens are mostly used in Africa

It is no wonder that most solar cookers are used in Africa. The reasons are simple: first because the sun there is very good for these activities that requires solar power. The second reason is that the quality of life is not great in this part of the world and people actually need to cook using firewood which is a dangerous activity there because women need to go into the woods and gather firewoods each and everyday exposing themselves to a lot of danger.

In these parts of the world, solar ovens are a necessity, not a fun thing to have. You will actually not see people using solar ovens for cooking hot dogs, because that’s a fun activity that you have with your friends in the backyard of your home, in US or wherever you may live. But not in Africa.

If we think about Africa and solar powered cookers, then we speak about necessity, about people working a lot each day to make sure they have enough firewood. Imagine that actually, those few hours that they need to wait in order for the food to get cooked in a sun powered cooking device are a bless comparing to the long hours they spend in the woods gathering wood and facing the danger of being beaten, raped or even killed.

People from US, Australia, NZ, Europe, who use solar cookers to cook hot dogs, don’t get me wrong, I just wanted to make a point. We may use it for fun, but in other parts of the world, such in Africa, solar cookers are a necessity, people need them in order to enhance the quality of their lives at least a little bit…
